David Milward 17 3/16" viola, 2007, Northumberland | Metzler Violins

versatile, well-bodied, brilliant

About the Instrument
This viola has a lovely, sparkly A string and a dark, clear lower register. While this is a larger viola, it is easy to play with a delightful sound. This instrument’s lustrous golden varnish brings out a unique two-piece back with a tiger figure that slants from the treble side across its center joint. Similar flames run along the ribs and scroll. The luthier thoughtfully antiqued and shaded this viola.

Interior label reads: “David Milward / Viola Maker / Instrument No. 66   Made 2007 / In Viola Workshop Kirkharle Courtyard, Northumberland, England” and bears the maker’s signature.
Length: 437 mm (17 3/16”)
Upper Bouts: 203 mm
Middle: 145 mm
Lower Bouts: 260 mm

About the Maker
David Milward a contemporary British luthier with a Newcastle upon Tyne-based workshop. Having grown up working with wood, Milward eventually turned to instrument making, attending the Welsh School of Violin Making. Soon, Milward focused entirely on crafting violas, employing traditional methods to develop instruments for professionals across the world. While he is largely regionally known, Milward’s expertise in this often-overlooked instrument has made him a favorite of violists worldwide. As of 2023, Milward has largely retired from making instruments.
